What Is a Lip Piercing?

A lip piercing goes through the skin around your mouth - above, below, or through the lip itself. The most common types include:

  • Labret: Centered below the bottom lip

  • Medusa (Philtrum): Centered above the top lip

  • Monroe: Off-center on the upper lip, mimicking a beauty mark

  • Vertical Labret: Enters below the lip and exits through the middle

  • Ashley: Goes straight through the bottom lip, front to inside

  • Snake Bites: A matching pair placed on either side of the lower lip

We complete each piercing with a single-use sterile needle and fit it with a flat-back post to allow for swelling. Once healed, you can change the jewellery or switch to a different style. You can choose the lip piercing placement based on your lip shape, anatomy, and the look you want.

Our lip piercings are popular with both men and women in Mississauga, Ontario.

Types of Lip Piercings

You can get lip piercings in different spots around the mouth, including the center or sides of the lower lip, the center or sides of the upper lip, directly through the lip itself, or in paired placements on both sides of the mouth.

Your choice depends on your anatomy, comfort level, and the look you want. Here's a breakdown of the most common types:

Labret Lip Piercing

Labret Lip Piercing

This is the most classic lip piercing. It uses a flat-back stud or a straight barbell with the post going straight through the skin under your lower lip. It’s simple and easy to heal, making it a good starter option.

Medusa Lip Piercing (Philtrum)

Medusa Lip Piercing (Philtrum)

Monroe Piercing

Also known as a Philtrum piercing, this sits in the natural dip above your upper lip. It’s done with a flat-back stud and can create a clean, symmetrical look. It is especially popular with minimal gem or disc ends.

Vertical Labret Piercing

Ashley Lip Piercing

Ashley Lip Piercing

The Ashley piercing has one visible end on the outer lip. The back end sits inside the mouth, similar to an inner-lip stud. It offers a sleek, minimalist look but tends to swell more, so sizing and downsizing matter.

Vertical Labret Piercing

This vertical lip piercing enters below the bottom lip and exits through the lip itself - so both ends of the jewellery are visible. A curved barbell is typically used. It does not pass into the mouth, which shortens healing time.

Placement: Centered just below the bottom lip.

Placement: Centered above the upper lip, under the septum.

Placement: Off-center on the upper lip.

Placement: Goes vertically through the lower lip.

Named after Marilyn Monroe, this piercing mimics a beauty mark on either the left or right side of the upper lip. It’s done with a flat-back stud and offers a bold but balanced appearance.

Placement: Through the bottom lip, front to inside.

Snake Bite Lip Piercing

Placement: A matching set on both sides of the lower lip.

Snake Bite Lip Piercing

These are two Labret piercings placed symmetrically under the bottom lip. They can be done together or in two sessions. Once healed, you can switch from studs to hoops for a more dramatic look.

Jewellery & Sizes Suitable for Pierced Lips

We start every lip piercing with a flat-back stud or a curved barbell, depending on placement. For example, a Labret or Medusa uses a stud, while a Vertical Labret takes a curved barbell with both ends visible.

Gauge

We typically pierce at 16 gauge (1.2 mm) or 18 gauge (1.0 mm). This size balances comfort, durability, and style.

Post Length

Initial jewellery is longer to allow for swelling. Once healed (usually after 4–8 weeks), we recommend returning to downsize the post to prevent movement or rubbing.

Material

We use only implant-grade titanium or 316L surgical steel. These are safe for initial piercings. Once healed, you can upgrade to 14k or 18k gold.

Jewellery Styles Available After Healing

  • Hoops or clickers (for Labret or Snake Bites)

  • Decorative ends (gem, opal, disc)

  • Custom designs available in-studio

At Xtremities, we offer free changes to lip piercing jewellery. Our piercers are happy to help you when your pierced area has healed.

Aftercare & Oral Hygiene

Proper care helps your lip piercing heal faster and lowers the risk of irritation or infection. Here’s what to do daily:

External Care:

  • Clean around the piercing twice a day using sterile saline spray or a saltwater soak.

  • Pat gently with a clean tissue - don’t rub.

  • Avoid makeup, lotions, or scented products near the piercing.

Oral Hygiene:

  • Rinse your mouth with an alcohol-free mouthwash after every meal.

  • Brush your teeth gently twice a day using a soft-bristle toothbrush.

  • Avoid alcohol, spicy foods, and smoking during early healing.

What to Avoid:

  • Don’t touch or twist the jewellery.

  • No kissing, sharing drinks, or oral contact until fully healed.

  • Avoid sleeping on your face or applying pressure to the area.

Check-ins

  • Swelling is normal in the first few days. If you notice heat, pus, or pressure, come in for a quick check. Our piercer will be happy to take a look and help adjust if needed.

FAQ

How bad does a lip piercing hurt, and how long will it be swollen?

Most clients describe it as a quick pinch. Swelling is normal for the first 3–5 days. We use longer posts at first to allow room, then downsize once swelling goes down.

Can you kiss after a lip piercing?

It is recommended that you avoid kissing while your piercing is healing. This helps prevent bacteria from getting into the area and reduces the risk of irritation or infection.

How long until a lip piercing is fully healed?

Most lip piercings take about 6 to 8 weeks to heal enough for downsizing. Full healing may take 3 to 4 months, depending on the type and how well you follow aftercare.

Can I put Vaseline on my lips after a lip piercing?

Don’t use Vaseline, as it can trap bacteria and block airflow around the piercing. Stick to sterile saline for cleaning, and use only unscented lip balmaway from the piercing site.

How long will my lip be swollen after piercing?

Swelling usually lasts 3 to 5 days. It may feel tight or look puffy at first - this is normal. If it worsens or doesn't go down, come in for a check.
