Professional Transverse Lobe Piercing Services in Mississauga

Our transverse lobe piercing service covers the whole process, from the consultation to your free downsize. This is an advanced piercing, so we treat it that way.

Your piercer starts by studying your lobe. They check whether it is thick enough, whether your lobe is attached or detached, and where a bar could sit without pressing on the edges. This piercing isn't suitable for every lobe, and we'll tell you honestly if it won't work for you.

Once we confirm your lobe works, we mark the entry and exit points and let you approve them in a mirror. We pierce with a single-use hollow needle using a clean freehand technique.

We fit the starter bar slightly long to leave room for swelling, then bring you back to downsize it for free once your lobe has settled. Detached lobes usually take a straight barbell, while attached lobes usually need a curved one.

A Transverse Lobe Piercing Does Not Suit All Ears

A transverse lobe piercing only works if your earlobe has enough soft tissue to hold a bar sideways. This is the most important thing to know before you book.

If your lobes are small, thin, or attached closely to the side of your head, a transverse bar may not sit safely. Forcing it can lead to migration, where the body slowly pushes the jewellery out, or rejection, where it works the bar out completely.

This piercing may also be a poor fit if your skin is keloid-prone or slow to heal, since the channel is long. During your consultation, we check all of this and give you an honest answer. If your lobe is not suited, we can suggest other looks that fit your ear better.

What Is a Transverse Lobe Piercing?

A transverse lobe piercing is a barbell placed horizontally through the earlobe, from the outer edge to the inner edge.

It differs from a standard lobe piercing. A lobe piercing goes straight through the front of the lobe to the back, so you see one earring on the front and the back behind the ear. But a transverse piercing bar runs sideways inside the lobe, and a ball sits at each end on the front of the ear. No shaft shows, so the two balls look like they float on the lobe.

You need accurate placement, good jewellery length, and an experienced piercer for this style.

Transverse vs. Vertical Transverse Lobe Piercing

A transverse lobe piercing runs side to side across the lobe, while a vertical transverse lobe piercing runs up and down. Both use a barbell inside the soft tissue of the lobe, and both show a ball at each end. The difference is the angle. Your piercer checks which one your lobe can support, since lobes are shaped differently.

Healing Time and Aftercare for Transverse Lobe Piercings

A transverse lobe piercing heals slower than a standard lobe piercing because the channel is much longer. Most settle on the surface within a few months, but they can take up to a year to fully heal inside.

Aftercare Instructions

Clean your transverse lobe piercing with sterile saline twice a day, once in the morning and once at night. Wash your hands first, then spray saline on both balls and the surrounding skin. Pat dry with a clean paper towel. Do not use a cloth because it may snag. During healing, do not twist or spin the bar. Keep makeup, hair products, and skincare off the area while it heals. If you see spreading redness, heat, or thick discharge, see a doctor. Our piercing aftercare guide has more detail.

Downsizing Your Jewellery

Downsizing means swapping your long starter bar for a shorter one once the swelling goes down. It is very important for a transverse piercing. We fit the first bar long on purpose, so there is room for your lobe to swell in the early weeks. Once that swelling settles, the long bar starts to shift, which can slow healing or bother the channel. So we bring you back, usually a few weeks in, to fit a shorter bar that sits closer to your lobe. There is no service charge for your first downsize. Booking it with us keeps the piercing on track to heal clean.

Transverse Lobe Piercing Jewellery

The right jewellery is a big part of what makes a transverse lobe piercing heal well. Because the bar sits inside the lobe, you need jewellery that is comfortable and will not cause irritation.

Barbell Styles

A barbell is the standard jewellery for a transverse lobe piercing. It comes in two main shapes. A straight barbell is the usual choice for detached lobes, where the bar can pass through in a straight line. A curved barbell is better for attached lobes, where a slight curve follows the shape of the lobe to ease pressure. Your piercer picks the shape that matches your lobe during the anatomy check, so the bar sits comfortably.

Materials

We start every transverse lobe piercing with a safe, low-reaction metal. 316L surgical steel is our top choice because it is light, hypoallergenic, and gentle on fresh tissue. Implant-grade titanium, also called ASTM F-136 titanium, is another safe option we stock. Because a transverse piercing holds more jewellery inside the lobe than most piercings, material matters even more for sensitive skin. For clients who react to metal or heal slowly, we can fit a soft bioplast bar, which is flexible and easy on the skin while it heals.

Gauge and Length

A transverse lobe piercing is usually done at 14 gauge, and sometimes 16 gauge, which is thicker than a standard earring post. The thicker bar suits the longer channel and helps it heal without narrowing. Length varies most from person to person. Because the bar has to span the width of your lobe, the length depends entirely on your anatomy. We measure your lobe and fit a starter bar with room for swelling.

The Transverse Lobe Piercing Process at Xtremities

Here is how a transverse lobe piercing works at our Mississauga piercing studio, step by step. Every stage focuses on getting the placement right.

Consultation

You start with a sit-down about the piercing. We talk through the look you want and explain how a transverse lobe piercing works. This is also where we handle ID and consent.

Ear Anatomy Check

Your piercer studies your lobe closely. They check the thickness and how much soft tissue there is to work with. This step decides whether the piercing is safe for you and which barbell shape will fit.

Marking and Placement

Our piercer marks the entry and exit points on your lobe with a surgical marker. You review the marks in a mirror and approve them. Careful marking keeps the bar level and the two balls even on the front of your ear.

Needle Piercing

Your piercer passes a single-use hollow needle through the lobe in one clean and controlled motion. The soft lobe tissue keeps this step quick and the pain low.

Jewelry Insertion

We follow the needle with your fitted barbell and set a ball on each end. Your piercer checks that the bar sits level and comfortable, then walks you through aftercare so you know exactly how to care for it at home.

Our Safety and Sterilization Standards

At Xtremities, we maintain a safe piercing environment by using single-use needles, autoclave sterilization, and implant-grade jewellery. We bring out a fresh hollow needle every time and open it in front of you. We never use a piercing gun, which cannot be fully sterilized. We clean and sterilize all our tools in an autoclave, then seal them in dated pouches so you can see when each one was prepared.

We run spore tests on our sterilizer every day, and an outside lab tests it twice a month. We share those results with the Region of Peel Public Health, so there is an independent record that our equipment is safe. We have never failed a health inspection in over 20 years. Our head piercer is APP-certified with more than 15 years of experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I sleep on my transverse lobe piercing?

It is best not to sleep on your transverse lobe piercing while it heals. Pressing the fresh piercing into a pillow can push the bar, slow healing, and cause irritation or migration. Try sleeping on the other side or on your back for the first few months. A travel or donut pillow with a hole in the middle can help you keep pressure off the ear.

Can I change the jewelry myself?

Sometimes. You should wait until your transverse lobe piercing is fully healed before changing the jewellery yourself. Even then, it's best to have the first change done by a piercer. The channel is long, so sliding a new bar through it can be tricky and easy to get wrong. Changing it too early can also tear the tissue or cause a bump. When you are ready, come in, and we will fit your new bar, or show you how to do it safely at home.

What happens if my anatomy isn't suitable?

If your lobe is not suited to a transverse piercing, we tell you honestly and do not pierce it. This piercing needs enough soft tissue to hold a bar sideways, and forcing it on a thin or attached lobe can lead to migration or rejection. If yours does not work, we can suggest other looks that fit your ear, such as a standard lobe stack, a curated ear layout, or a different placement. Our goal is a piercing that heals well and lasts.
