What Is an Industrial Piercing?
An industrial piercing connects two separate points of cartilage in the upper ear using a single straight bar. Most commonly, it links the helix (outer rim) to the forward helix (closer to your head). Both piercings are done in the same session and share one piece of jewellery, usually a barbell that passes through both holes.
However, industrial piercing only works if your ear’s shape allows the bar to sit comfortably without tilting or pressure. If the angles don’t align, we may recommend a variation like a floating or chain industrial.
Types of Industrial Piercings
The most common type of industrial piercing uses a straight bar to connect the helix to the forward helix. However, alternatives like vertical, floating, chain, and double industrials offer different placements or healing options. Choose the one according to your ear shape and the look you’re going for.
Straight Industrial Piercing (Standard Scaffold)

This is the classic industrial piercing. It connects the outer rim (helix) to the forward helix using a single straight barbell. Both holes are done in one session and share the same jewellery. Your ear must have the right angle and ridge shape to support the bar without it leaning or pressing unevenly. Most industrials are pierced at 14 gauge with a longer bar at first to accommodate swelling.
Vertical Industrial Piercing
This is the classic industrial piercing. It connects the outer rim (helix) to the forward helix using a single straight barbell. Both holes are done in one session and share the same jewellery. Your ear must have the right angle and ridge shape to support the bar without it leaning or pressing unevenly. Most industrials are pierced at 14 gauge with a longer bar at first to accommodate swelling.
Floating Industrial Piercing
This option uses two separate studs during healing instead of a bar. It’s ideal for clients whose ear shape doesn’t support a rigid bar right away. After both piercings heal, a straight bar can be added. This reduces tension during healing and makes the piercing possible for more ear shapes. It also allows for flexible jewellery styling after healing.
Chain Industrial Piercing
Instead of a bar, a chain links the two cartilage piercings. This adds movement and reduces the stiffness or pressure caused by a straight bar. Chains are usually added after initial healing, using flat-back or threaded ends. It’s a good option for clients who want the industrial look but need less tension across their ears.
Double Industrial Piercing
This style uses two scaffold piercings on the same ear, often crossing different points of cartilage. It's only possible if your ear anatomy can support multiple placements. These are typically done in two sessions, spaced apart for healing. Once both are healed, you can customize them with matching bars or decorative ends.
Industrial Piercing Anatomy
Consider the anatomy for industrial piercing carefully before deciding whether this style would suit you. This piercing connects two cartilage points with a straight bar, so both locations must line up well without straining the tissue.
You may be a good candidate if:
-
Your ear has clearly defined ridges (typically the helix and forward helix)
-
There’s enough space and angle alignment for a bar to sit flat
-
Your cartilage shape doesn’t force the bar to tilt or press unevenly
During your visit, we assess this alignment before marking or piercing. If the angles don’t work for a straight bar, we might suggest a floating setup (two studs), a flexible chain industrial, or staged piercings done in two visits.
How Long Does an Industrial Piercing Take to Heal?
Healing after a piercing occurs gradually and can take several months. Since this piercing involves two cartilage points connected by a single bar, it needs more time and care than other ear piercings.
The industrial piercing healing stages include:
Stage 1: Weeks 0–2 – Swelling & Tenderness
You’ll likely notice redness, heat, and swelling around both entry points. This is normal. Avoid pressure, twisting, and contact with hats, headphones, or masks.
The industrial piercing healing stages include:
Stage 2: Weeks 3–8 – Reduced Swelling & Monitoring Fit
The swelling starts to go down. The bar may feel looser as your ear settles. Around week 6–10, you should come in for a downsizing check to improve comfort and reduce stress on the piercing.
Stage 3: Months 3–6+ – Maturation
Even if it looks healed, cartilage continues to firm up inside. Consider changing to decorative ends or switching to a different bar once stability is confirmed. Avoid sleeping on the pierced side until there’s no soreness at all.

FAQs
How much does an industrial piercing cost in Mississauga?
Industrial piercings at Xtremities typically start at $60 for the service, plus the cost of jewellery.
How long does it take for an industrial piercing to heal?
Healing can take 3 to 6 months or longer, depending on your anatomy and aftercare. We recommend a downsizing visit between weeks 6–10, once swelling has subsided.
How painful is an industrial piercing?
Because it involves two cartilage piercings in one session, industrial piercings can feel more intense than a single piercing. Most clients describe it as sharp pain followed by soreness for a few days.
Is industrial piercing different for men?
The piercing process is the same for both genders. Many men prefer matte black or brushed metal jewellery for a low-profile look, but the anatomy check, placement, and healing stages are identical.
Can you sleep on an industrial piercing while it’s healing?
Sleeping on an industrial piercing is not recommended during early healing. Pressure from pillows can cause swelling, soreness, or shifting of the bar. Using a travel pillow or sleeping on the opposite side helps protect the piercing while it heals.
