What Is a Conch Piercing?
A conch piercing is a hole made through the cartilage of your ear’s inner shell, called the concha. It sits in the middle part of your ear, either in the flat inner section or closer to the outer rim.
There are two types:
-
Inner conch piercing: done through the middle cartilage area
-
Outer conch piercing: placed closer to the outer ridge of the ear
Our piercers use sterile hollow needles to create the hole in a way that avoids unnecessary trauma. The process is quick and performed using gloves, clamps, and sterilized jewelry. Piercers will assess your ear shape and discuss which conch style suits you best.
Inner vs Outer Conch Piercing: What’s the Difference?
A conch piercing goes through the cartilage bowl of your ear. But there are two ways to do it: inner and outer. The difference depends on where we pierce your ear.
Inner Conch Piercing
-
This goes through the flat, central part of your ear.
-
It sits just inside the ear, close to the ear canal.
-
Most people wear a stud in this area because it sits flush and doesn't move much.
-
It’s a good option if you want something simple and low-profile.
You can feel this area by placing your finger in the middle of your ear, near the hole where sound goes in. That’s where the inner conch sits.
Outer Conch Piercing
-
This one is placed closer to the edge of the ear, still in the cartilage, but higher up.
-
It’s usually made to hold a hoop that goes around the rim of your ear.
-
The look is bolder and more visible, perfect if you want something that stands out.
To feel your outer conch, slide your finger from the ear canal toward the outer rim. Where the cartilage still feels thick but sticks out a bit, that’s the spot.
Which One Should You Choose?
It depends on your ear shape, jewelry style, and pain tolerance.
-
Inner conch are often easier to heal and suit smaller ears.
-
Outer conch needs more space and works best with hoops or rings.
We always check your ear and let you know which one fits your anatomy and your style best.
Types of Conch Piercings & Styles (Which One Suits Your Ear Best?)
Conch piercings are placed in the bowl-like area of your ear's cartilage. But depending on how much space you have and the style you want, there are a few different ways to do it. Here’s what each type looks like:
-
Inner Conch Piercing: This one sits right in the middle of your ear, in the thick part of the cartilage close to the ear canal. Place your finger just inside the bowl of your ear; that’s the inner conch. It’s great for a flat stud or a small hoop that hugs the ear closely. Clean, simple, and easy to hide under hair if needed.
-
Outer Conch Piercing: Goes a little farther out, toward the outer rim of your ear, but still deep in the cartilage. This is where you often see larger hoops circling around the edge of the ear. It’s more visible than the inner conch and makes a bold statement. Perfect if you want to stand out from all angles.
-
Double Conch Piercing: Two conch piercings in the same ear, placed either one above the other or side by side. You can wear matching studs or mix a stud and a hoop for a cool layered look. Works best if you have a wider ear or thicker cartilage.
-
Orbital Conch Piercing: Looks like one big hoop going through two holes in your ear. The ring connects both piercings and loops around the ear's inner side. It’s a more advanced style and turns heads, but not everyone’s ear is shaped for it.
-
Contra Conch Piercing: A rare placement done on the opposite side of where most conch piercings go. It gives you a unique twist, but not all piercers offer this one due to its tricky location. Only recommended if you have the right anatomy.
Conch Piercing Jewelry & Gauge Sizes
We offer a wide selection of conch piercing jewelry that fits both your ear and your style. The jewelry is sterilized and made of implant-grade material.
Popular choices include:
-
Conch piercing stud – great for initial healing
-
Conch piercing hoop – classic look after healing
-
Flat-back labret studs – for inner conch stability
-
Captive bead rings – for a clean, minimal design
-
Gold and titanium options – for comfort and sparkle
What is a conch piercing gauge?
A conch piercing gauge refers to the thickness of the jewelry that goes through the ear. Most conch piercings are done with a 16-gauge needle, which is about 1.2 mm thick. Some clients prefer a slightly thicker 14-gauge (1.6 mm) for added durability, especially for hoops or heavier jewelry.
What gauge is a conch piercing?
We use 16-gauge jewelry, which is the safest size for healing. 16G is the most common, though some anatomy may allow for 14G. We help you pick what fits.
Pain, Healing Time & Aftercare
Conch piercing pain is often described as a pressure and pinch that lasts a second or two. Cartilage piercings usually feel sharper than lobe ones, but are still tolerable. Most clients rate it around 4 to 6 out of 10.
How a Conch Piercing Should Heal (Day by Day)
The conch piercing healing time is between 6 and 12 months, depending on your body and how well you care for it.
Day 1–3: The Fresh Start
Your ear will feel warm, sore, and slightly swollen. You might see clear fluid or light redness around the hole.
This is totally normal. Avoid touching it, and start cleaning with saline or the aftercare spray we provide.
Day 4–7: The Swelling Phase
Swelling usually peaks around this time. You might notice some crust forming at the jewelry base; that’s just dried lymph, not pus.
Keep up with your daily cleaning routine and don’t twist or move the jewelry.
Week 2–3: Settling In
Swelling begins to go down. Pain becomes more like a dull ache or pressure.
Sleeping on that side can still hurt, so try to stay off it.
The skin around the hole may still be red, but should not feel hot or throb.
Month 1–3: Deep Healing Begins
The surface looks better, but deep inside is still healing.
You’ll notice less crust, and it feels more comfortable day to day.
Continue cleaning once or twice daily, and keep it safe from bumps or pressure.
Month 4–6: Strengthening Stage
The piercing becomes more stable.
You can switch to a shorter bar or snug hoop, but only with our piercer’s help.
Sleeping on it still isn’t great – keep using a travel pillow or soft fabric donut if needed.
Month 6–12: Fully Healed
Your conch piercing healing time is about 6 to 12 months.
Once it stops getting irritated or crusty and feels fully settled, it's healed.
At this point, you can safely change jewelry yourself if your hands and tools are clean.
To support healing, follow this routine:
-
Clean with saline 2–3 times daily
-
Avoid touching or twisting the jewelry
-
Don’t sleep on the pierced ear
-
Avoid earphones, helmets, or pressure on the area
-
Wash your hands before cleaning the area
-
Avoid alcohol, peroxide, or harsh chemicals

Examples of Conch Piercing We’ve Done Before

A single conch piercing is placed low in the inner cartilage, close to the ear canal. The jewelry is a flat-back stud with a small, clear gem that sits flush against the skin. Its position balances naturally with the helix and lobe piercings above and below.

Silver ball stud placed cleanly in the centre of the conch area. It sits evenly in the flat cartilage bowl, aligned for a balanced fit with the other piercings. Healing looks smooth with no visible redness or swelling around the implant-grade jewelry.

Single conch piercing with a silver ball end sits deep in the central cartilage bowl of the ear. It’s positioned for balance and comfort, nestled between the outer rim and ear canal. The ball-style jewelry is implant-grade, sitting flush with no signs of irritation.

Single conch piercing fitted with a small silver ball stud. jewelry sits deeply in the central bowl of the ear, well-aligned with the curve of the helix. Piercing appears fresh and clean, surrounded by complementary gold and diamond earrings for contrast.

FAQs
How long does a conch piercing take to heal?
Healing usually takes 6 to 12 months. The surface may feel fine sooner, but deep cartilage needs time to fully settle.
Does a conch piercing hurt more than a lobe one?
Yes, a conch piercing hurts slightly more than a lobe piercing due to cartilage. It’s a quick, sharp pinch, and then it’s over.
Can I sleep on my conch piercing?
It’s best to avoid sleeping on the pierced side until fully healed. This helps prevent irritation and keeps jewelry from shifting.
What’s the best aftercare routine for conch piercings?
Clean with saline, don’t touch with dirty hands, avoid headphones and pressure, and follow your piercer’s advice.
