What to Expect at Your Appointment
Your bridge piercing appointment at Xtremities follows a set order, and your piercer walks you through each step out loud. Most clients are in and out in 30 to 45 minutes.
ID and consent. Show valid photo ID and fill out our piercing consent form.
Anatomy check. Your piercer confirms you have enough tissue depth to hold a straight barbell without tension.
Placement marking. We mark two or three possible spots with a surgical skin scribe. You pick the one you want in a mirror.
Sterile setup. The single-use needle, sterile clamp, and titanium barbell are opened in front of you. Every pouch shows a sterilization date.
The piercing. The needle passes through in one controlled motion, and the barbell follows. Most clients feel a sharp pinch and watering eyes for a few seconds.
Aftercare briefing. Your piercer explains the cleaning routine, sends you home with our in-house saline spray, and books your free downsize check.
A small number of clients feel light-headed after any facial piercing. This is called a vasovagal response, and it usually passes within a few minutes. We keep water and lollipops on hand and will not let you stand up until you feel steady.

How Xtremities Tattoo And Piercing Marks Your Bridge Piercing
Xtremities marks your bridge piercing across two or three candidate spots first, then lets you choose the exact placement in a mirror before we open any tools.
This is one of the biggest differences between our shop and studios that mark one spot and pierce it straight away.
Here is how the marking step works:
-
Your piercer pinches the skin along the top of your nose to find the area with the most even tissue depth.
-
They mark two or three possible entry and exit points with a sterile surgical skin scribe.
-
You check the marks in a mirror and put your glasses on if you wear them.
-
Friends or family in the room can weigh in on symmetry.
-
We re-mark as many times as you need before opening a single sterile pouch.
This collaborative approach comes from over 20 years of watching what happens when clients feel rushed into a placement they were not sure about.
Once you approve the final marks, your piercer confirms the correct bar length against your marked tissue and pulls the matching pre-sterilized barbell from stock. Every clamp, needle, and jewelry pouch carries a dated sterilization label. If any tool has been sitting in storage for more than 30 days, we re-clean, re-package, and re-autoclave it before it goes anywhere near you.

Is a Bridge Piercing Right for Your Anatomy?
A bridge piercing is not right for every face, and finding that out before you sit down saves you a rejected piercing and a scar. Our piercer runs a "pinch test" to check how much loose skin lifts freely away from your nasal bones.
Here is what we look for during the check:
-
Enough tissue depth for the barbell to sit without tension against either entry point
-
Even skin thickness across both proposed mark points
-
Skin that is not too tight, thin, or flat across the ridge
-
No eczema, active acne, or breakouts at the site
-
Conditions that rule out a bridge piercing on the day include:
-
Pregnancy
-
Active facial rosacea flare-ups; Isotretinoin (Accutane) treatment in the last six months
-
Any autoimmune skin condition affecting the piercing site
If your anatomy is borderline, we tell you plainly. In some cases, we recommend a dermal piercing as a longer-lasting option.

Bridge Piercing Styles at Our Mississauga Studio
Nose bridge piercings are placed in three standard positions on the upper nose:
-
The classic centred bridge across the nasal ridge
-
The third-eye placement at the glabella
-
Combination layouts paired with existing nostril or septum piercings
The right one for you depends on where your nasion sits, which is the depression where the nasal bones meet the forehead, and whether you wear prescription glasses.
Every style at Xtremities Tattoo and Piercing Studio starts with a 14-gauge sterile hollow needle and a straight, internally-threaded ASTM F-136 titanium surface barbell. Starter bars run 12mm to 16mm to accommodate early swelling before your free downsize.
Classic Centred Bridge (Original Erl Placement)
The classic centred bridge was first popularized in the mid-1990s by piercer Erl van Aken, which is why the placement is still called an Erl piercing in the industry. It sits horizontally across the widest point of the nasal ridge, level with the pupils when you look straight ahead. It is the most requested bridge placement at our Mississauga shop.
Healing: Eight to twelve weeks on the surface, four to six months for the channel to stabilize.
This position suits most nose shapes with enough loose skin across the mid-bridge to hold a straight barbell without tension. It sits comfortably under sunglasses and pairs cleanly with:
-
Symmetrical nostril studs
-
A dainty septum ring or clicker
-
Paired high nostrils for a triangular facial layout
If your nasion sits low or your bridge is narrow, this classic placement usually photographs better than a higher position
Third-Eye High-Bridge Placement
The third-eye placement sits at the glabella, above where most glasses frames rest. We suggest this position to daily glasses wearers who cannot switch to contacts during healing.
Healing: Three to six months on the surface.
The tissue at the glabella is thinner than at the mid-bridge, which changes a few things:
-
Migration risk is higher under repeated pressure
-
We fit a shorter, lower-profile titanium bar to reduce load
-
Sleep position matters more during the first month
During marking, we ask you to put your daily frames on so both entry points clear the bridge of your glasses. Thick plastic frames give the most clearance. Thin wire frames usually need a slightly higher placement to keep the barbell clear of the metal bridge.
Bridge as Part of a Curated Face
Most bridge piercings we do are not standalone. Clients add them to a curated face that already includes nostrils, a septum, or a medusa. A centred bridge barbell anchors the layout and balances symmetry across the upper face.
If you are building the layout in stages, the safest order is:
-
Nostrils first, since they have the shortest healing time and are easiest to work around later.
-
Septum second, once the nostrils have settled past the swelling stage.
-
Bridge last, after the surrounding piercings are healed enough to sleep on.
That order keeps fresh piercings from pressing against healing ones next to them. We can map your full curated face on a paper diagram during your first appointment, mark future positions in a surgical pen so you can see the layout on your skin, and photograph the reference for your next visit.

Can I Get a Nose Bridge Piercing If I wear Glasses?
Wearing glasses does not stop you from getting a bridge piercing, but it does mean planning around them for the first few weeks. That’s why we require you to bring the frames you wear every day to your appointment.
Different frame styles clear a bridge piercing differently:
-
Keyhole bridge frames with a gap over the nose give the most barbell clearance
-
Saddle bridge frames, which rest across the whole bridge, need a higher placement
-
Nose-pad frames, typically wire or metal, sit on either side and rarely interfere
-
Aviators and wayfarers with thick top bars usually need the classic centred placement
During the marking step, your piercer will have you put your daily frames on so we can see exactly where the bridge of your frames rests. We then place the entry and exit points either above or below the frame bridge, never right behind it.
For the first ten to fourteen days, follow these habits to protect the piercing:
-
Slide your glasses slightly lower on your nose than usual
-
Switch to contact lenses if you own a pair
-
Avoid pushing your frames up with your finger throughout the day
-
Wipe your glasses arms and bridge daily with a clean cloth
If contacts are not an option, ask your piercer about padded nose bridges or lighter frames you can wear short-term while the piercing settles.
Bridge Piercing Aftercare and Healing
Bridge piercing healing runs eight to twelve weeks on the surface, and four to six months for the tissue channel to fully stabilize. Aftercare should be simple, consistent, and gentle. The industry calls this the LITHA principle, which stands for "leave it the hell alone." Clean it twice a day, protect it from friction, and otherwise let your body do the work.
Cleaning With Our In-House Saline Spraya
Clean your bridge piercing twice a day using the sterile saline spray we send you home with. We formulated our aftercare spray in-house and have used it at our Mississauga shop for over 20 years. It is a sterile isotonic saline wound wash, which means it matches the salt concentration of your own body fluids and does not sting healing tissue.
Daily cleaning routine:
-
Wash your hands with plain soap and water first.
-
Spray both sides of the barbell directly.
-
Pat the skin dry with fresh gauze or a clean paper towel.
-
Do not rotate, twist, or slide the barbell during cleaning.
Skip these products entirely:
-
Rubbing alcohol
-
Hydrogen peroxide
-
Tea tree oil
-
Fragranced soaps and face washes
-
Antibiotic ointments like Polysporin, which trap bacteria against healing tissue
These products dry the tissue, kill healthy cells, and cause irritation bumps that are often mistaken for infection.

Protecting the Piercing While It Heals
Keep face wash, makeup, sunscreen, and moisturizer off the piercing site during early healing. Any of those products can pool around the barbell and slow tissue recovery.
Things to avoid during the first four weeks:
-
Sleeping face-down on a pillow
-
Wearing tight-fitting sunglasses or headbands
-
Swimming in pools, hot tubs, or lakes
-
Long hot showers with your face under running water
-
Pushing your glasses up with your finger
Watch your glasses and pillow at night, because both are the most common causes of bridge piercing migration.
How to Spot Migration or Rejection Early
Migration means the barbell is slowly moving through your tissue toward the surface, and rejection means your body is pushing it out entirely. Catching either early gives us a chance to save the piercing with a jewelry swap.
Watch for these signs:
-
The visible portion of the barbell between the two entry points is getting shorter over time
-
Skin is thinning over the top of the barbell and starting to look shiny or clear
-
The barbell feels loose or wobbly compared to earlier in healing
-
Extended redness past week eight, without any obvious snag or knock
-
The entry or exit points look larger than they did originally
If you spot any of these, call the shop before you touch the jewelry. We assess and, if the piercing can still be saved, downsize or swap the bar at no charge.
Free Jewelry Downsize Once Swelling Settles
Your starter barbell is intentionally slightly longer than the final size to allow for early swelling. Once the swelling has gone down, usually around week eight to twelve, come back to our Mississauga shop for a free jewelry downsize.
Here is what is included at your downsize visit:
-
Swap of the longer starter bar for one sized to your healed tissue
-
Placement check by your original piercer
-
Aftercare touch-up guidance based on how your tissue is healing
-
No charge, no appointment needed
Do not swap the jewelry yourself, and do not let anyone else insert a shorter bar for you. The tissue can still close or reject if the fit is wrong.
Age Policy for Bridge Piercings
Xtremities sets a higher age minimum for surface piercings like the bridge than we do for standard ear lobes or nostrils. There are three reasons for that:
-
Bridge piercings take months to heal
-
They sit on visible facial tissue that affects daily life
-
They carry a higher rejection risk than most other placements
-
Facial bones typically finish growing in the late teens, and a surface piercing placed during that window can shift as the tissue underneath develops.
Requirements for every bridge piercing appointment:
-
Valid government-issued photo ID
-
Minors must attend with a parent or legal guardian carrying matching photo ID that proves the relationship
-
No piercings during pregnancy
-
No piercings over broken, sunburned, or actively irritated skin
Contact our shop before your visit if you are under 18 so we can confirm our current bridge piercing age policy. We follow the Ontario public health regulations for personal service settings.
Call (905) 897-3503 to confirm eligibility.
What Is a Nose Bridge Piercing?
A nose bridge piercing is a horizontal surface piercing through the pinchable skin sitting on top of the nasal bones, between the eyes. It sits in the industry's "surface piercing" category, which means the needle enters and exits through the same flat plane of skin rather than passing through cartilage.
Because the piercing lives on surface tissue, your body treats the straight barbell like a foreign object under constant stress from muscle movement, sneezing, and squinting. Migration and rejection are more common on a bridge piercing than on a standard lobe, nostril, or helix.
The piercing does not touch cartilage, the septum, or the underlying nasal bone. That means the sensation is closer to a snug pinch than the deep pressure of a nostril or septum piercing. Placement, tissue depth, and correct bar length matter more than the piercing itself.

FAQs
Does a bridge piercing hurt more than a nostril piercing?
Most Xtremities clients rate a bridge piercing as similar to or slightly less painful than a nostril piercing. The needle passes through loose surface skin instead of thick nostril cartilage. You will feel a sharp pinch and your eyes will water for a few seconds because of the trigeminal nerve pathway. The piercing itself takes under ten seconds.
Why do bridge piercings sometimes reject?
Bridge piercings reject when the barbell sits under constant tension from either shallow tissue depth or the wrong bar length. Our piercers lower that risk with a pinch-test screening, a straight lightweight titanium starter bar, and a free downsize once swelling drops. If your anatomy is not a fit, we say so upfront rather than pierce and hope.
Can I switch to a curved barbell later?
You can switch from a straight starter barbell to a curved bar once the piercing has fully healed, usually around months four to six. Come back to the shop for the swap. Our piercer checks the channel has settled and picks a curve that follows the shape of your nose bridge. Switching too early causes tissue pressure and migration.
Can I fly after getting a bridge piercing?
You can fly right after a bridge piercing since cabin pressure does not affect surface piercings. Bring your in-house saline spray in a compliant travel-size bottle, avoid touching the piercing with unwashed hands during the flight, and clean it once you land. Skip in-flight alcohol for the first 48 hours.
Do you take walk-ins for bridge piercings?
Xtremities takes walk-in bridge piercings seven days a week during business hours. Call ahead so we can plan enough time for the anatomy check and marking step. Our shop stays open until 9 pm Monday through Saturday, and 6 pm on Sunday. Phone (905) 897-3503 to check the current wait time.
