Belly Button Piercing Anatomy & Styles

Your belly button’s shape plays a role in the kind of belly button piercing that suits you best. The anatomy refers to how your navel is shaped, like whether it folds inward, sticks out (outie), or has enough skin above or below to hold jewellery safely.

A good candidate for a navel piercing has a clear inward fold and a ridge of skin that can hold a barbell without pulling or irritation. Not every belly is suited to every style, so your piercer will check your anatomy before suggesting a type.

Types of Belly Button Piercings (Based on Anatomy)

  • Standard Belly Button Piercing

Goes through the top ridge of skin above your navel. Works best if you have an “innie” with a soft fold and enough skin above the belly button.

Standard Belly Button Piercing
  • Floating Belly Button Piercing
Similar to the standard, but the jewelry used has a shorter post and smaller ball at the bottom. It alleviates pressure on the navel. This piercing is ideal for flatter navels or those with tight skin where traditional jewellery won’t fit well.

  • Bottom Belly Button Piercing
Goes through the lower edge of the navel. This is great for navels with a stronger bottom fold or if the top isn’t ideal for piercing.

Two Clients Showing off Their Belly Button Piercings

The above image shows two clients proudly showing off their belly button piercings, freshly done at Xtremities. Each piercing is positioned symmetrically above the navel using classic curved barbells. The jewellery choices highlight the client’s style, one with a shimmering opal-like bottom gem, and the other with a clear, high-shine crystal.

Vertical Navel Stack Piercing

Vertical Navel Stack Piercing

Four pieces of jewellery are aligned vertically along the stomach, starting from the upper rim of the belly button and extending downward in a straight line. The top and bottom are finished with larger crystal ball ends, while the two middle studs decrease in size for a clean, cascading look. This stacked belly button piercing is an advanced style that blends a standard navel piercing with additional vertical placements for a symmetrical and bold design.

The positioning shows expert precision and a solid understanding of piercing anatomy. It works well for people with flatter navels and enough space to allow multiple posts without overlapping or crowding.

Unique Belly Button and Hip Piercing Combo

The above image features a bold combination of belly button piercing and bilateral hip piercings. The navel is pierced in the standard top-down style, featuring a classic black gemstone barbell that adds contrast against the skin. On each side of the waist, near the pelvic lines, a pair of dermal-style hip piercings is set evenly and symmetrically, both adorned with small, round gems.

Classic Gold Belly Button Piercing with Crystals

Classic Gold Belly Button Piercing with Crystals

The above style features two actual piercings, one through the upper rim of the navel (standard belly button piercing) and another just below it. The jewellery is designed to create a stacked effect, with multiple visible gems arranged vertically. The larger central gem sits inside the navel, while the smaller top and bottom ends enhance the look without needing extra piercings. It’s a stylish choice for those who want the appearance of a triple without committing to three separate holes.

The above belly button piercing features a sleek gold curved barbell with bezel-set crystal ends, offering a bold but elegant look. The top ball is small and refined, while the bottom gem is larger and perfectly centred in the navel. The warm gold finish stands out beautifully against the skin, giving this classic style a rich, polished feel.

This piercing is a great choice if you want something timeless, clean, and easy to dress up or down. It’s also a great fit for those who prefer gold belly button jewelry that resists tarnish and irritation.

FAQs

What’s the difference between a standard, floating, and bottom belly button piercing?

A standard belly button piercing goes through the skin just above your belly button. A floating piercing is also done on top, but uses a shorter post with a small top so it "floats" and hides better. A bottom belly button piercing goes through the skin underneath your belly button instead of the top. These are all styles of belly button piercings, and your piercer will help choose the best one for your belly shape.

Can I get a belly button piercing if I have an outie?

It is not recommended to pierce an outie. Some outies have too much scar tissue or not enough skin to safely hold jewellery. A trained piercer checks your belly and tells you if a belly button piercing is safe for you. It depends on how your outie belly button looks and how the tissue is shaped.

Why is Xtremities the safest place for a belly button piercing in Mississauga?

Xtremities uses sterile tools and experienced staff who have pierced thousands of navels. Our team follows health rules and takes time to check your belly shape before doing the piercing. That’s why we’re known for safe belly button piercing in Mississauga.

Can I go swimming 3 months after a belly button piercing?

It’s better to wait at least 4 to 6 months before swimming. Even though 3 months feels long, your skin may still be healing under the surface. Pools, lakes, and hot tubs have germs that can cause infections in a belly button piercing, even if it looks okay on the outside.

How do I know what jewellery and post (backing) size I wear?

Your piercer will measure your belly and help choose a barbell that fits your skin depth. Most people start with a 10mm post, but sizes may vary depending on swelling and how your belly is shaped. Always ask a professional before changing your belly button piercing jewellery.

How do I care for my jewellery?

Clean your belly ring gently with saline spray or mild soap and warm water. Don’t use alcohol or harsh cleaners. Dry it with a paper towel, not fabric. This keeps your belly button jewellery shiny and helps prevent germs from building up around the piercing.
