7 Types Of Cosmetic Tattooing And Why You Want Them!

The types of cosmetic tattooing are microblading and ombré for shapely, fuller eyebrows, and permanent eyeliner for lash-line definition. They also include lip blush for soft colour and shape, machine nano brows for ultra-fine work, freckle tattoos for a sun-kissed look, and scar camouflage for blending old scars into the skin.

People want cosmetic tattoos for all kinds of reasons. Some want fuller brows. Others are tired of redoing eyeliner that smudges by lunch. Some have lost colour in their lips or brows, and want it back. Others just want to skip a few steps in their daily routine.

At Xtremities Tattoo & Piercing Studio in Mississauga, we offer several cosmetic tattoo services in-house. We provide microblading, ombré powder brows, and permanent eyeliner. All are done by our experienced cosmetic tattoo artist, Alison. Call (905) 897-3503 for a free consultation.

1. Natural Microbladed Eyebrows

Microblading is a technique in which each "hair" is drawn one stroke at a time using a fine, blade-like handheld tool. The hair-like strokes are placed between and around your real brow hairs, mimicking the direction and length of natural growth. Up close, the result looks like fuller brows you grew yourself.

People often want microblading to give thin, patchy, or uneven brows a fuller yet soft, realistic finish. It works best on dry to normal skin. On oily skin, the fine strokes tend to blur faster.

Microbladed brows usually last about 1 to 2 years before they soften and need a refresh.

2. Powdered Ombré Brows

Ombré powder brows are a type of eyebrow tattooing that uses a small machine to deposit pigment in thousands of tiny dots. The dots build a soft, gradient shade across your brow. The front is light and airy, the body builds slowly, and the tail lands full and defined. The final result looks like brows brushed with a gentle hand.

People with oily and mature skin often choose ombré brows. Microblading often softens too quickly. It is also a strong choice for anyone who fills their brows in daily and wants a finished look built into the skin.

Ombré tends to hold up well over time. It lasts 1 to 2 years.

3. Permanent Eyeliner

A permanent eyeliner tattoo is placed along the lash line. The pigment is tucked between the lashes for a subtle "thicker lashes" effect. It is drawn as a clean line for a defined look, or extended into a small wing for a lifted finish. Done right, it looks like the eyeliner you'd apply with a steady hand.

You may want permanent eyeliner to avoid having to draw one every day. If you also have oily lids that smudge your makeup by noon, permanent eyeliner is a great option. Swimmers, athletes, and clients with shaky hands or vision changes tend to love it too.

The healing process takes about 4 to 6 weeks, and the colour usually lasts 1 to 2 years.

4. Machine Nano Brows

Nano brows look similar to microblading, but they're applied with a digital machine rather than a hand tool. The machine uses an ultra-fine single needle to deposit pigment with less skin trauma, often resulting in crisper strokes during healing.

Nano brows are sometimes recommended for clients with sensitive or oily skin who still want the realistic stroke look. That's because the finish tends to last longer than traditional microblading.

5. Permanent Lip Blush

Lip blush is a soft tint placed across the lips to even out colour, define the shape, and make the lips look fuller without filler. It's not a lipstick effect, so there's no harsh outline. The pigment sinks into the skin so your lips look like they do on a really good day, just permanently.

This service is popular with clients whose natural lip colour has faded with age, or whose lips are uneven in tone. It also helps people whose lip line has softened.

During healing, expect peeling, dryness, and a colour that looks much darker for the first few days before settling. Final colour usually lasts 2 to 3 years.

6. Freckle Tattoos

Freckle tattoos place small dots of pigment across the cheeks and nose to look like natural freckles. The dots are placed in a soft, scattered pattern, and the size and density are tailored to your face. Done well, they look like freckles you've had since childhood.

Freckle tattoos are semi-permanent and tend to fade faster than other cosmetic tattoos because they sit very close to the surface. Most last 1-3 years before fading completely.

7. Scar Camouflage

Scar camouflage uses flesh-tone pigments to blend old scars, stretch marks, or skin discolouration into the surrounding skin. It's not the same as covering a scar with a decorative tattoo. The goal is to make the area visually disappear.

This service works best on mature, fully healed scars that are flat and lighter than the surrounding skin. It's not suitable for raised scars, keloids, or actively healing tissue.

The results are subtle and gradual, and most clients need multiple sessions to get full coverage. A consultation is the best first step.

FAQs

What is cosmetic tattooing called?

Cosmetic tattooing is also known as permanent makeup, semi-permanent makeup, micropigmentation, and PMU. The names describe the same general idea: placing pigment under the skin to enhance your natural beauty.

How does cosmetic tattooing work?

A trained artist uses a fine needle to deposit pigment into the upper layer of the skin. The pigment settles, the skin heals over it, and the colour shows through softly. Most cosmetic tattoos gradually fade over 1 to 3 years.

Is cosmetic tattooing permanent?

Long-lasting, but not truly permanent. The pigment fades over time as your skin renews itself. Most results last 1 to 3 years. It depends on the service, your skin type, sun exposure, and the products you use in the area. In contrast, traditional tattoos last permanently.

Does cosmetic tattooing cover scars?

Some types do. Scar camouflage uses flesh-tone pigments to blend mature, flat scars into the surrounding skin.

Is cosmetic tattooing the same as microblading?

Microblading is one type of cosmetic tattoo, but cosmetic tattooing includes other techniques. Ombré brows, permanent eyeliner, lip blush, and scar camouflage are all cosmetic tattoo services.

Do lips always peel after lip blushing?

Yes. Peeling is part of healing for lip blush. It is normal and expected. Around days 3 to 7, the lips dry out, flake, and shed the top layer. The colour underneath looks lighter and softer than it did right after the appointment.

How painful is a cosmetic tattoo?

Most clients describe it as scratching, light pressure, or a tickling buzz rather than real pain. A topical numbing cream is applied beforehand to keep the session comfortable.

How long does cosmetic tattooing take?

Most sessions run between 1 and 2.5 hours, depending on the service. Brows usually take 90 minutes to 2 hours. Eyeliner runs about 90 minutes. Lip blush takes a bit longer because the area is more sensitive and the pigment needs more careful layering.

Do they shave off your eyebrows for microblading?

No. Microblading is designed to work with your natural brow hairs, not around them. Your artist may trim or clean up stray hairs to get a better view of your brow shape, but your natural brows stay where they are.
